The Amadablam Mini Hydro Project (911 kW), built at an altitude of over 4,400 meters in the Everest region, is recognized as the highest-altitude mini hydropower plant in the world. Developed by Amadablam Mini Hydro Ltd., the run-of-river system harnesses the waters of Cholunche Khola (Nare Khola) to supply clean and reliable electricity to 451 households across 19 remote Sherpa villages, including Chukhung, Dingboche, Pangboche, Tengboche, and others. Implemented under the MGEAP program with support from the Government of Nepal, the World Bank, and the Ministry of Forest and Environment, the project follows strict environmental safeguards within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By delivering sustainable energy to homes, lodges, and local businesses, the project is transforming daily life in the Khumbu region enhancing tourism, supporting livelihoods, empowering indigenous communities, and contributing to a greener, more resilient future in one of the world’s most iconic mountain landscapes.
